Ingredients

  • Toor dal – 1/2 cup
  • Pearl onions – 15 (peeled)
  • Tomato – 1 (chopped)
  • Tamarind – small lemon-sized ball
  • Sambar powder – 2 tsp
  • Turmeric – 1/4 tsp
  • Hing – 1/4 tsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves – 1 sprig
  • Coriander leaves – for garnish
  • Manila Groundnut Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Salt – to taste

Instructions

  • Pressure cook toor dal with turmeric and mash well.
  • Soak tamarind and extract 1.5 cups of juice.
  • Heat groundnut oil. Add mustard, curry leaves, and onions. Sauté till translucent.
  • Add tomatoes, sambar powder, and tamarind extract. Simmer for 10 mins.
  • Add cooked dal. Adjust salt. Simmer everything together for 5–10 mins.
  • Garnish with coriander and serve with hot rice or idli.
